UHL's HIMSS Journey

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is passionate about digital maturity. A key component of their digital vision is achieving the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (HIMSS) level 7 accreditation.

Solution

St. Vincent's helped the Trust understand its current level of maturity by carrying out a HIMSS EMRAM baseline assessment. This let UHL benchmark their progress against a recognised scale. We then created a clear roadmap for their digital journey towards HIMSS level 7 and highlighted ‘quick wins’ that would enable to Trust to achieve higher HIMSS certification levels in an expedited timeframe.

Outcome

Although a new EPR/PAS implementation carries risk, the HIMSS assessment went some way to mitigate that by identifying the key requirements and functionality of the implementation. It also ensured all critical areas of cyber security were understood and satisfied.

Leadership's understanding of the digital vision also proved hugely beneficial. The assignment enlightened the Trust to the complexities of HIMSS and enabled them to pinpoint critical digital focus points. They understood precisely what functionality they required from new solutions, this empowered their discussions with vendors, providing outcomes that served the Trust, and maximised the value of their investment. They were therefore able to achieve a successful EPR and PAS implementation and definitively demonstrate benefit as they advanced along the HIMSS roadmap. This is especially helpful when senior leadership need to demonstrate improvement during budget and strategy discussions. We continue to work with the Trust, supporting them with their digital goals.

Other benefits of HIMSS EMRAM certification include:

  • Improved Patient Safety: Evaluate and improve patient safety by optimising Electronic Medical Record (EMR) implementation to meet the needs of the care team and provide access to data and critical information when and where it is needed
  • Increased Patient Satisfaction: Meaningfully engage with patients and clinicians to manage overall health and wellness. Improve communication, improve productivity and efficiency, reduce the risk of errors in care delivery and strengthen patient engagement and experience. Enhance care delivery by having the right information at the right time for both the patient and the clinician, while improving communication between the care team and the patient or guardian
  • Supported Clinicians: An effective EMR is designed for the distinct uses of the clinicians who work with it. The EMRAM ensures the workflow and content in the digital tool meets the needs of the clinical teams while monitoring compliance with approved standards
  • Secured Data: Effective hospital policies and governance support and strengthen data integrity, data security is a critical component of a high performing work environment supported by an EMR. The EMRAM guides the organisation in policymaking for the appropriate use and protection of the data the EMR stores and the level of access available to clinician teams, patients, and others within the organisation.
