HIMSS

A key element of the Trust's digital vision is to achieve the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (HIMSS) level 7 accreditation.

Solution

We carried out a HIMSS EMRAM baseline assessment to help the Trust understand its current level of maturity. We also highlighted ‘quick wins’ to achieve higher HIMSS certification levels in an expedited timeframe and provided a roadmap to HIMSS level 7.

Outcome

This assignment enlightened the Trust around some of the complexities of HIMSS. Also, the roadmap could be input directly into planning. This insight enabled the Trust to pinpoint critical digital focus points.

The Trust had an up-and-coming EPR and PAS implementation, and because they were clear on their digital vison and goals, they knew exactly what they required from the new solutions. This influenced their discussions with the vendor and will undoubtedly maximise the value of their investment. It also helped to drive vendor alignment as there is a vested interest in meeting a defined measure of success.

Although a new EPR/PAS implementation carries risk, the HIMSS assessment went some way to mitigate that by identifying the key requirements and functionality of the implementation. It also ensured all critical areas of cyber security were understood and satisfied.

Moreover, this process allows the Trust to internally (and externally) benchmark and monitor progress. This is especially helpful when senior leadership need to demonstrate improvement during budget and strategy discussions.

Other benefits of HIMSS EMRAM certification include:

  • Improved Patient Safety: Evaluate and improve patient safety by optimising Electronic Medical Record (EMR) implementation to meet the needs of the care team and provide access to data and critical information when and where it is needed
  • Increased Patient Satisfaction: Meaningfully engage with patients and clinicians to manage overall health and wellness. Improve communication, improve productivity and efficiency, reduce the risk of errors in care delivery and strengthen patient engagement and experience. Enhance care delivery by having the right information at the right time for both the patient and the clinician, while improving communication between the care team and the patient or guardian
  • Supported Clinicians: An effective EMR is designed for the distinct uses of the clinicians who work with it. The EMRAM ensures the workflow and content in the digital tool meets the needs of the clinical teams while monitoring compliance with approved standards
  • Secured Data: Effective hospital policies and governance support and strengthen data integrity, data security is a critical component of a high performing work environment supported by an EMR. The EMRAM guides the organisation in policymaking for the appropriate use and protection of the data the EMR stores and the level of access available to clinician teams, patients, and others within the organisation.
